motionless in space... We hear accordion music as we CUT TO:
2 int. holodeck - chez sandrine program 2
SEVEN OF NINE, TOM PARIS, TORRES, and THE DOCTOR are preparing to engage in a game of pool. Paris is racking the balls. Various holodeck N.D. supernumeraries are milling about in the B.G., seemingly oblivious to the pool game. Torres seems especially unhappy.
seven
I fail to see the point to this exercise. This is a rather simplistic game based on elementary Newtonian mechanics.
doctor
You’re missing the point, Seven. The game of pool is an ancient one. It’s less a contest of skill, and more of a socializing event.
paris
Speak for yourself, Doc. I, for one, play to win.
Paris breaks solidly, but no balls are sunk. Torres gives him an annoyed look. He shrugs, apologetically, as if to say, “not my fault.” Seven readies her que.
Seven
In any event, I do not see why you would wish to challenge me in such a match. My Borg cortical implant and ocular enhancement make the outcome obvious. (beat) You will be defeated.
Seven’s shot punctuates her last word. Two balls move easily into the pockets. Paris looks uncomfortably at Torres, who seems livid.
2 Continued: 2
paris
I guess we’re stripes. (To Seven) Not bad, Seven, but pool is more than ‘Elementary Newtonian Mechanics.’ There are an almost infinite number of variables, which even Borg technology couldn’t possibly -
Paris is interrupted by Seven’s next shot - which sinks two more balls. Torres rolls her eyes. Seven is quite pleased with herself.
torres
What was that you were saying, Tom? I was distracted by how much more fun this is than the Rio de Janeiro beach program I had planned this evening.
seven
Perhaps you would like to concede defeat now and salvage what remains of your evening, Ensign Paris.
Seven banks a shot - but misses. She, and all the others, appear stunned. Torres realizes that her turn has come, and moves to take her first shot.
torres
So much for Borg perfection. You see, Seven, 100 teraflops per second can’t compete with simple, organic intuition.
Torres makes an easy bank shot. She pauses to give Seven a satisfied look. Her next shot is just short.
Seven
Indeed.
doctor
You’re all missing the point. We’re here to teach Seven an important lesson about her Human heritage. You’re all treating this as some sort of green felt covered battle field!
paris
Lovely speech, Doc, but it’s customary to make excuses AFTER you lose. Your turn.
2 Continued: (2) 2
The Doctor chalks his que, then examines the end with great interest.
doctor
I see. Well, if that’s your attitude, Mr. Paris, perhaps you would do well to remember that, as a holographic computer program, I have access to a sizable fraction of the ship’s computer resources - making me a force to be reckoned with in these situations. Behold:
The doctor calmly makes his shot, hardly looking at the table. One by one, all of the solid balls drop into the pockets; the eight ball last. The Doctor smiles smugly. Seven and Torres exchange amazed glances. Paris looks surprisingly pleased.
Paris
Nice, but you forgot to call the eight-ball, Doc. You lose.
doctor
What? What are you babbling about, Ensign?
paris
The eight-ball. You have to call the pocket it’s going to fall in, or you lose. Sorry.
doctor
That’s absurd! That rule is ancient. No one practices that any more!
paris
Like you said, the point was to teach Seven about her heritage... Now, if you two will excuse us, B’Elanna and I just have time to catch the sunrise over the ocean in Rio...
Before the doctor can object, the com system interrupts --
kim’s com voice
Kim to Seven of Nine.
seven
Seven here, what is it, Ensign?
2 continued: (3) 2
kim’s com voice
The Captain wants you to meet her in the transporter room right away.
seven
Acknowledged. (She exits).
CUT TO:
3. INT. Transporter room 3
JANEWAY, TUVOK, and two security officers are already in the room. Tuvok mans the transporter controls. A strange probe is on the transporter pad. It appears similar to Borg design, but somehow different. Seven enters.
seven
(to Janeway)
Captain.
janeway
Seven, we have a bit of a riddle. I thought you might like to help solve it.
seven
What sort of riddle?
Janeway
We just retrieved this device we found drifting through space - its primitive warp drive off-line. Its technology seems to have many elements in common with Borg technology - only much less advanced.
tuvok
Scan complete, Captain, there appear to be no biological or other hazards present.
janeway
Fine. Lower the containment field.
The field sparkles and dies. Janeway moves to get a closer look. Seven follows.
3 continued: 3
seven
(uninterested)
I see. You believe this may be a piece of Borg technology, and you wish me to analyze it.
janeway
Yes, but there’s much more to this mystery than that, Seven. Based on our analysis of trajectory, taking into account relativistic time dilation, and considering radioactive decay in its power cells, we believe this device comes from the heart of Borg space - and that it is over 1000 years old...
Seven looks suddenly interested. She gazes intently at the alien probe.
seven
If your hypothesis is correct, then this piece of Borg technology--
janeway
-- may predate the formation of the Borg collective...
CLOSE on Seven’s face. Seven reacts to Janeway's remark, but tries to keep her excitement in check. The wonder in her eyes belies her stoic facade.

4. EXT. SPACE - VOYAGER (OPTICAL) 4
again at warp speed... As she passes, we hear Janeway’s voice:
janeway (v.o.)
Captain’s Personal Log, Stardate 5xxx.x. Seven of Nine and The Doctor are hard at work analyzing the probe, which we believe may be from the civilization which spawned the Borg. The entire ship is buzzing with excitement about this new discovery. I must admit to a certain amount of anticipation myself.
5. int. sickbay 5
Seven and the Doctor are examining the probe on a diagnostic bed. They pass various instruments over the device.
doctor
Well, there are clearly no organic components to this device, which certainly casts doubt on the Borg origin hypothesis. However....
The Doctor frowns at something on the readout of his scanner.
seven
However, what?
doctor
This does bear a more than passing similarity to the Borg implants I have encountered in the past - including your own.
seven
How so?
5 continued: 5
doctor
Take these nanotubes. Although they appear to require a bulky series of sub processors to control them, they are structurally similar to the cilia of your nanoprobes. Theoretically, they are just as capable of manipulating matter on a molecular level.
seven
My readings indicate that this node is similar to a Borg neural interface. It is inoperative. I may be able to modify my nanoprobes to reactivate it. That might enable us to extract the information contained within the probe’s memory.
doctor
(uneasily)
Perhaps we should study this some more. We don’t want to reactivate it and have it start assimilating things.
seven
Unlikely. This device is incapable of assimilating anything. I will reactivate the node.
Seven extends her assimilation tubes into the probe. The Doctor starts to object, but it is too late. There is a flash of light and --
CUT TO:
6 int. - Voyager’s Officer’s Mess 6
Seven is standing inside the room (sans Borg implants), as is Harry Kim. However, rather than seeing stars through the windows, we see a city on a beautiful, sunlit day. Kim is removing strange looking weapons from an alien weapon rack on the wall. He is not in uniform, but rather some type of black body armor. Seven is similarly dressed. Red lights are flashing, and a siren is blaring.
KIM
(To Seven) Luvan, grab your weapon, let’s go!
6 continued: 6
Seven stands, confused. Kim continues to shout at her - addressing her as Luvan.
We change perspective to see...
7 Seven’s new pov (optical) 7
From Seven/Luvan’s perspective, we see Kim. Superimposed upon his image is scrolling text. We can read : “NETLINK ACTIVE. DIRECTIVE RECEIVED. INTRUDER ALERT IN RESEARCH LAB 3. STOP INTRUDERS AT ALL COSTS.”
KIM
Luvan, are you OK? That’s our section, we have to go!
8 seven and kim 8
Seven shakes her head, as if to clear the remnants of a dream - or perhaps to remember one...
SEVEN
I am fine, Pahtor. We must hurry.
Seven grabs a weapon from the rack, and follows Kim from the room. They proceed into :
9 int. corridor 9
Kim, and Seven rush through the corridor, with weapons held defensively in front of them. They rush to the turbolift. Kim momentarily looks distracted, as if he is reading something floating before him.
Kim
Internal sensors show the intruders in the central power plant.
seven
Confirmed. They are probably trying to sabotage the facility’s power.
kim
You take the upper level. I’ll proceed to level one.
seven
Acknowledged.
9 continued: 9
Seven and Kim exchange glances. Seven touches a wall control, and the lift closes.
CUT TO:
10 INT. voyager engine room - upper level 10
The room is darkened, and looks somehow different. The lift opens, revealing Seven and Kim. Seven exits, nods to Kim, and the lift closes. Seven steps cautiously. On the deck below her, Kim exits the lift. She nods to him over the railing.
Cautiously, they move through the shadows. As Seven approaches the reactor, she notices an intruder, it is CHAKOTAY, but not in uniform. His back is turned, and he is adjusting something on a control panel.
seven
Hands up! Step away from the controls and identify yourself!
Chakotay slowly raises his hands and turns. Seven covers him with her weapon. Below, Kim takes up position to aim his weapon at Chakotay.
seven
I said, identify yourself!
11 chakotay 11
chakotay
I’m afraid I’m not prepared to do that just now.
12 seven 12
seven
What is your purpose here?
13 chakotay 13
chakotay
Just window shopping. You folks in the Cyborg Products division have some neat toys.
13 continued: 13
Chakotay glances to the side. Seven correctly interprets this, and we see:
14 over seven’s shoulder 14
Seven shifts her weapon to the same direction. A man steps out of the shadows, weapon pointed at seven, but she fires first, and he falls.
15 chakotay 15
Chakotay reacts quickly. He raises a weapon as if to shoot Seven.
16 including kim 16
kim
Luvan, look out!
Kim lifts his weapon to fire:
17 wide angle 17
Kim and Chakotay fire, nearly simultaneously. Chakotay’s shot is knocked off-target slightly, as Kim’s blast hits him. Seven is hit in the shoulder, but the momentum sends her spiraling over the rail, to land flat on her back on the deck below. Kim runs to her side and there is another flash of light --
CUT TO:
18 int. sickbay 18
As before, but the Doctor is holding Seven by the shoulders, and has pulled her away from the probe. Seven looks stunned - where is she? The Doctor scans her with a medical instrument.
doctor
Seven, are you OK? Can you respond?
seven
What has happened?
18 continued: 18
doctor
The second your assimilation tubes touched the probe, you seemed to go blank. You were completely unresponsive. Your vital signs started to fluctuate wildly, so I pulled you away. And none too soon, it seems. Your adrenaline levels were off the scale!
Seven seems confused, as if she is trying to remember a dream. She reaches a decision, and taps her com-badge.
seven
Seven of Nine to Janeway.
Janeway’s com voice
Janeway, here. Go ahead, Seven.
seven
Captain, I believe I have discovered the purpose of the probe.
janeway’s com voice
Good work, Seven. I’ll assemble the senior officers in the briefing room in 5 minutes. You can report your findings there.
seven
Acknowledged. Seven out. (to the Doctor) Activate your mobile emitter and join us in the briefing room in 5 minutes.
Seven turns abruptly and exits sickbay before the Doctor can respond.
doctor
(offended) Aye, Aye, sir!
CUT TO:
19 INt. Briefing room 19
Seven is standing at the window, staring out into space. The doors part, and JANEWAY enters, followed by CHAKOTAY, PARIS, TUVOK, TORRES, and KIM.
19 continued: 19
The crew take their seats, with the exception of Seven. Janeway accepts this breech of protocol reluctantly - Seven is obviously distracted, so she will allow it.
Janeway clears her throat, as if to begin speaking when the doors part, and THE DOCTOR enters. Janeway notes this with annoyance.
janeway
So nice of you to join us, Doctor.
doctor
My apologies, Captain. I was finishing my scans of the probe.
janeway
(Surprised)
Finishing? I thought the analysis was complete.
The Doctor starts to respond, but he is interrupted by Seven.
seven
It is!
Everyone looks at Seven, slightly shocked by this outburst. Seven notices the stares, and composes herself somewhat.
Janeway looks slowly from Seven to the Doctor (who has decided not to speak), and then back to Seven. It’s obvious they’re going to disagree about this...
janeway
(Calmly)
All right, please explain, Seven.
Seven glances momentarily back to the window, takes a breath, and begins:
seven
The probe is, as you suspected, of pre-Borg origin.
Janeway
How do you know this?
19 continued: (2) 19
seven
I have concluded this partly from the analysis of the probe’s technology, and partly... (looks to the Doctor hesitantly)
janeway
(prodding)
What is it, Seven?
seven
The probe transmitted knowledge to me directly.
janeway
Explain.
seven
The probe contains a primitive Borg-like memory repository. When I interfaced with this device, it began transmitting its nemonic contents to me.
janeway
(Outraged)
Interfaced! Seven, what were you thinking?
seven
Captain, it was not my intention to form a neural link with the device. I was merely attempting to inject my nanoprobes into the system to reactivate the storage node --
doctor
(interrupting)
-- at which point, the device activated, seized control of Seven’s implants, and began directly manipulating her synaptic network at a molecular level! According to my scans, had I not pulled Seven away, serious synaptic alteration might have occurred!
19 continued: (3) 19
janeway
Doctor, are you saying the probe tried to assimilate Seven?
seven
No! Captain, the purpose of the memory repository is to store the most recent experiences of a deactivated drone. These experiences, once downloaded, may prevent other drones in the collective from falling victim to whatever force deactivated the original drone.
paris
A Borg Diary?
seven
Inaccurate, but essentially correct. The module contains the essence, but not the exact details of a drone’s experiences. (To Janeway) Captain, the knowledge contained within that device may provide us with invaluable information - I must resume my neural link with the probe.
doctor
Captain, I must advise caution. We don’t know exactly what that probe is doing to Seven’s synaptic network.
tuvok
I must agree. For all we know, this is a Borg attempt at deception. If Seven were reassimilated, Voyager could be in grave danger.
kim
Maybe if we could construct some sort of memory buffer between the probe and Seven to prevent any harmful interaction.
torres
A type of preprocessor? Might work.
19 continued: (4) 19
seven
It will fail. The data in the node is not complete - it is stored symbolically. It is designed for direct interpretation by an organic brain, using an organism’s own experience to complete the details.
chakotay
There doesn’t seem to be any harm in at least trying it Mr. Kim’s way...
seven
That is a waste of time and resources.
janeway
(sternly)
Your objections are noted. We’ll try Ensign Kim’s suggestion. End of discussion. (To Torres) B’Elanna, help Harry and the Doctor set up the preprocessor. Dismissed.
Janeway stands. The other officers stand and file out - except for Seven. Janeway gives her a look, daring her to speak. After the others leave, she does just that:
seven
You are deliberately interfering with my investigation. You force me to study my Human heritage, but try to deny that the Borg are a part of my personal history.
janeway
Seven, I’m doing nothing of the kind. In your rush to find answers, you may endanger yourself and this ship. I won’t allow it. (beat) And THAT is the final word on the subject! One more comment, and this project ends now.
Seven gives Janeway an icy stare, turns, and marches out - leaving Janeway to stare out of the window. These constant arguments are frustrating...
FADE OUT:
END ACT ONE:
act two
20 int. sickbay 20
SEVEN, THE DOCTOR, TORRES, and KIM are working again on the probe. They have constructed some sort of device which is connected to the probe by fiber optic cable, and to Seven by some sort of electrodes, attached to her implants. Seven is seated on the diagnostic bed beside the device, her face articulating her annoyance at this endeavor.
Kim and Torres finish checking the last of the connections between the devices, as the Doctor finishes a medical scan of Seven’s head. Kim and Torres exchange affirmative glances. Kim and the Doctor nod to each other: they are ready to proceed.
kim
Seven, we’re ready to try the buffered link. Now, the Doctor will monitor your vital signs, and B’Elanna and I will keep a close eye on the link. Are you ready?
seven
The sooner we begin, the sooner we can end this pointless line of experimentation.
torres
That’s the spirit, Seven. Your enthusiasm is overwhelming.
Seven responds with an icy glare. The others wait for a more positive confirmation from her, but soon realize that none is forthcoming.
torres
I guess that means she’s ready.... Harry?
kim
OK. I’m activating the buffered link now - maximum filter setting.
Kim touches a control, and the link activates. Seven seems unaware of the change at first, then cocks her head slightly, as if listening to something.
seven
I seem to be hearing a slight buzzing sound. Nothing more.
20 continued: 20
kim
I’ll loosen the filter parameters somewhat. (off console) How’s that?
DISSOLVE TO:
21 seven’s pov (optical) 21
We see diffused white light. There is a lack of color or distinct form, but we can perceive some motion - perhaps someone is moving in the field of view - it is not quite possible to tell. A modulating buzzing noise rises to an annoying volume. It sounds as if someone is speaking, but the voice is somehow scrambled.
seven (O.S.)
I cannot distinguish anything. This is insufficient.
kim (o.s.)
I’m opening the filter another 15 percent. (beat) Anything?
Random colors flash as the scene jumps slightly. The figure in front of us is now more discernible, but it is impossible to make out much from the image. The buzzing sound is now more obviously a voice, but we cannot understand it.
seven (O.S.)
It’s not working. Try expanding the filter parameters on the back channel.
kim (o.s.)
Acknowledged. Increasing back channel flow 15 percent.
Suddenly the scene is more distinct, and we can nearly make out the voice. A face hovers nearby, somehow familiar, though still blurry, and the words being spoken are almost discernible.
seven (O.s.)
This is better, but I still cannot resolve any details. Increase the filter opening further.
kim (o.s.)
(hesitantly)
Opening another 5 percent.... Wait a minute. (alarmed) Something’s happening!
21 Continued: 21
An alarm sounds. We hear the sounds of controls being touched rapidly. The familiar voices of the Doctor, Torres, and Kim are heard in the background, slowly becoming more excited, but they are distorted so that we can no longer understand their words.
Seven’s POV is resolving, and the strange voice is becoming more distinct than those of her shipmates as we...
CUT TO:
22 int. sickbay 22
The same as before, but Seven is staring off into the distance, lost. Kim and Torres are desperately working on the probe and the device connecting it to Seven. The Doctor scans Seven’s head, looking gravely concerned.
Kim
(off console)
The probe has inserted nanotubes into the buffer interface! It’s somehow rewiring the interface to take direct control of Seven’s implants!
torres
(off console)
Understood! I’m trying to reset the buffer preprocessor to its original configuration -- but it’s rewiring itself too quickly!
doctor
(off tricorder)
We must disconnect her at once! I am detecting synaptic changes similar to what she experienced before!
torres
Doctor, what happens if we just pull the plug -- physically yank out the interface connections?
doctor
(off tricorder)
The nanotubes have inserted themselves into her cerebral cortex - pulling the connections now could cause irreparable brain damage. We have to cut power to whatever is controlling this thing!
22 continued: 22
Kim looks up, frustrated. He slams down the instrument he is holding in disgust. The others glance up sharply, surprised.
kim
It’s no use. I just disconnected the probe’s power unit. (a beat) It’s now drawing power directly from Seven’s Borg implants.
The officers exchange worried glances as this news sinks in. Kim shakes his head and then taps his com badge.
kim
Kim to bridge.
chakotay’s com voice
Bridge here. What can I do for you, Ensign?
kim
Commander, we have a problem...
MOVE IN ON SEVEN’S FACE AND HOLD until we
DISSOLVE TO:
23 seven’s new pov 23
The fuzzy image has focused and we see that it is Doctor’s face up close. He looks concerned.
doctor
Lieutenant, can you hear me?
The Doctor pulls back slightly, and we see that they are:
24 int. sickbay 24
This is Voyager’s sickbay, but with less technologically advanced objects scattered about the room. The Doctor is not in his uniform, but rather somewhat more recognizable surgical scrubs. Seven lies on a diagnostic bed under a sheet. Various tubes extend from her legs and torso area, attached to instruments which appear reminiscent of Borg design. Seven looks around, slightly dazed.
seven
I....I’m fine, Doctor. What happened?
24 Continued: 24
doctor
22 hours ago, you got shot, managed to fall about 5 meters onto a hard metal floor, broke your back, and nearly flattened the brain in that armor-plated skull of yours.
Seven thinks about this for a moment. The memories drift back to her slowly.
seven
I remember. We were attempting to stop intruders in the power plant. (a beat) Were we successful?
doctor
Somewhat. One of the intruders survived the shoot-out -- barely. He’s recovering in lockup, and will be questioned shortly. Two others escaped while you were distracted.
seven
I must return to duty.
doctor
Don’t rush yourself. You just had about eight centimeters of your spinal column repaired. It will take a while for the spinal implants to sort out the damaged nerve fibers. The neural interface to your Netlink cranial implant suffered some trauma, which I have programmed the nanotubes to repair.
seven
I see. How long will this take?
doctor
The initial stage will be complete any moment now, but you must take it easy for a time. The nerve fibers around your implants may be inflamed for a while. (a beat) While you’re here, Lieutenant, I’d like to talk to you about that organic right eye of yours.
Seven glances away. She is clearly uncomfortable with this topic.
24 continued: (2) 24
seven
What about it?
doctor
I can replace it for you today. There’s no need to delay it any longer.
seven
I see no reason to rush the procedure, either.
doctor
Having a binocular visual record from your Netlink makes it much easier for the Controllers to determine what is going on when you get into one of these security situations. Besides, it may help your headaches...
seven
(defensively)
What do you mean?
doctor
According to your Netlink, you’ve been experiencing discomfort. I believe this is due to the disparity between your enhanced eye and your organic eye.
seven
How kind of you to review my uplink so.... thoroughly.
doctor
(sternly)
Luvan, I hope I don’t need to remind you that you could be hurting your career by resisting these enhancements so strongly.
seven
I don’t see what my career has to do with this.
24 continued: (3) 24
doctor
Scientech Corporation has done more to change the face of this world than anything before it -- governments included. We touch every single aspect of life on this planet. We’ve forever altered the concepts of communication, medicine -- even space travel! We are taking the planet into the future, where our next logical evolutionary step awaits. It is the duty of every member of our company to embrace that vision - to make our species better than it is. We can’t guide our race through this stage of evolution unless all of us are of one mind about it. If you get the reputation for being a closet Naturalist, you could lose your place in this company -- in our future.
seven
I am not a naturalist!
doctor
Glad to hear it - now how ‘bout that eye? I can have you upgraded and out of here in 26 hours...
Suddenly, as if on que, the machinery attached to Seven beeps, and the tubes withdraw from her body on their own power. Seven rises and hops off of the table, clutching the bed sheet around her. She forces a pleasant smile for the Doctor.
seven
Sorry, Doctor. I have too much work to do right now to be out of commission that long. Maybe next time. (a beat) Now, can I have my clothes, please?
The Doctor looks unhappy as he reaches O.S. to gather up and hand Seven a neatly folded black uniform.
CLOSE ON THE UNIFORM TUNIC as we CUT TO:
25 close on tunic: (optical) 25
PULL BACK SLOWLY from the tunic to reveal that Seven is once again wearing it.
25 continued: 25
Seven is holding something resembling a night stick in her right hand, slapping it against the open palm of her left hand menacingly. With each impact, the far end of the stick discharges electrical energy. As the scene continues to expand, we see that she is in:
26 int. voyager’s brig 26
This is the familiar holding cell, but it has some primitive -- and threatening -- bladed tools on a rolling table. Chakotay sits, strapped in a chair dressed in a drab jumpsuit with a number stitched into it. He has been beaten severely, and looks weary. Kim stands beside him, opposite of Seven. He also has an electrified baton, and wields it in such a way as to inspire fear.
kim
As much fun as this has been, Nat. Don’t you want to just get it over with? Tell us something we can use.
chakotay
Okay, fine. You’ve both seen way too many of the old Entertainment Vids -- this is a very tired routine.
On Chakotay’s last two words, Kim raises his baton. The blow to Chakotay’s collar bone punctuates his sentence. Chakotay spasms as the baton discharges electrical energy into him. Seven reacts with surprise, perhaps a hint of alarm. Chakotay tries to hide his extreme pain, but his composure is slipping.
kim
Pretty funny, Nat. Unless I miss my guess, though, that broken collar bone has to hurt like hell when you breathe. Don’t you wanna get this over with?
chakotay
(labored)
My name is not Nat. It’s Jasp. I told you that much.
kim
Your a Naturalist, so I call you Nat. What’s the matter, aren’t you proud of your belief system?
26 continued: 26
chakotay
Of course I am -- just as proud as I am of my mother and father who gave me my name.
kim
(disgusted)
Ah! Why do you Nats always have to bring up your nasty reproductive habits? It’s all about sex with you people.
chakotay
That is the natural way...
kim
As natural as the gene therapy you received while in your mother’s womb?
chakotay
We use nature’s own tools -- not bits of metal and plastic -- to cure our diseases and infirmities. That’s what makes so many of your people sneak off at night to our districts -- to try out the real thing.
Chakotay turns his head - painfully - to Seven, gazing leeringly at her body. He winks at her. Kim raises his baton again.
kim
You revolting piece of --
seven
Pahtor!
Kim stops, glares at Seven, then lowers his baton. He shakes his head, and laughs quietly. Slowly, deliberately, he lifts one of the blades on the table and traces (without cutting) a line along Chakotay’s cheek.
kim
Very good, Nat. Got me off track for a while. (nods) Very good, indeed. (a beat) Now, tell me what I want to know. Who is working with you? Where did they take the items you helped them steal?
26 continued: (2) 26
chakotay
I told you. Roja and I were alone. We were just sightseeing - when you two showed up and killed him.
kim
You broke in and tried to sabotage the power plant while two of your comrades infiltrated the research lab. Where are they?
chakotay
There’s a word. Some of your women have used it when they come to my room at night. (sneers) I think I’ve learned how to use it correctly : Go ...Link... with yourself.
Kim drops the blade onto the table, turns his back on Chakotay for a moment, and takes a breath. Suddenly, he whirls back around, jabbing his baton into Chakotay’s chest and holding it there. We see:

seven
Pahtor, Stop!
29 kim 29
Kim’s angry face shows a grim determination. He continues to push.
30 seven 30
Seven looks desperately back and forth between Kim and Chakotay, horrified.
31 chakotay 31
His convulsions grow worse, his mouth gaping in a soundless scream.
32 kim 32
His face is filled with rage and hatred. He shows no sign of releasing his grip.
33 chakotay 33
His eyes start to roll back into his head. He is dying.
34 seven 34
Leaps from her position, tackling Kim. They crash to the floor. Kim’s baton spins across the floor, impacting the wall and discharging harmlessly.
seven
Commander!
Kim struggles at first, but finally relaxes.
35 full shot 35
Seven, realizing that Kim has stopped struggling, stands and helps him to his feet. Chakotay is slumped over in his chair. Seven checks Chakotay’s pulse.
seven
He’s alive -- barely.
kim
Too bad.
seven
We still need him for information!
kim
Perhaps, but that disgusting -- (stares blankly) Wait a minute.... (smiles) guess we don’t need him after all - check your Netlink.
36 seven’s pov (optical) 36
Superimposed on Kim’s Image, we read the following scrolling text: “SENSOR LOGS ANALYZED: INTRUDERS LOCATED. RETURN TO COMMAND POST FOR REDEPLOYMENT.”
KIM
Let’s go bag some Nats!
act three
37 int. Voyager’s briefing room 37
This is Voyager’s Briefing Room, but through the windows, we see sunset over the same city as in scene 6 from a higher angle. Tom Paris is standing at the head of the table when Seven and Kim enter. Tom is dressed in a black uniform similar to those of the other officers, but his is decorated, as if he is of significantly higher rank. Paris motions to the others to take a seat, which they do. Without preamble, Paris begins speaking.

At oh-nine-hundred hours yesterday, four intruders infiltrated a tour group, and penetrated internal security. Research Lab Three was compromised. Two of the intruders apparently slipped back out via the same security holes through which they entered, while two others attempted to cover the intrusion by sabotaging the central power plant. We believe we have uncovered the identity of the two intruders who escaped.
kim
Let me guess: Naturalists?
paris
I don’t think that should come as a surprise, Commander. (a beat) By the way, what is the condition of the Naturalist prisoner you’ve taken?
kim
(uncomfortably)
He is... uncooperative.

People who are nearly comatose usually are, I’m told.
kim
Sir, I can explain --

paris
I’m really not interested in an explanation, Security Commander. The point here is that our corporation’s authority to serve as a policing agency in cities worldwide is dependent on our agents actually obeying the law. (a beat) And, although I personally don’t agree with it any more than you do, the Naturalists still have certain rights -- one of which is the right not to have their brains beaten out during an interrogation. Is that clear?
kim
Yes, sir!
Paris gives Kim a long, hard look. Kim seems properly chastened. Seven shifts uncomfortably in her seat.
paris
While you’re at it, you might want to thank the good Lieutenant here for saving your career. (to Seven) The method could have been a little better, but the end result is, as always, the most important thing.
Seven has trouble meeting Paris’s gaze. Paris abandons this line of conversation, and moves to the wall mounted display behind him. He touches a control, and pictures of Janeway and Torres appear on the display. Janeway’s image is above Torres’s, and there is text to the left of each.
paris
These are your suspects. At the top is Sela Kenan. The one on the bottom is Tegan Banai. We know very little about them, except for the fact that they are registered Naturalists. As such, they have very little in the way of computer records. We do know that they frequent a flesh house in the Naturalist district called “Au Naturale.”

Kim
(disgusted)
Typical. I guess a girl’s gotta make a living.
seven
Sir, what would Naturalists want from a Cyborg Products lab?
paris
Good question. We can’t be sure precisely what they were after, but we know what they took. RL-3 is, among other things, a system backup center -- not only for Cyborg Products, but for the Space flight Division and the Military Products Division, as well. Several backup modules were stolen, containing data which spanned all three divisions.
kim
Was there any commonality among the projects represented in the backup modules?
Paris
Who knows? Some of that stuff is so classified that I don’t even know about it. I do know that information on the development of the new Warp Drive, as well as some research into improved Netlink interfaces was on those modules.
seven
I don’t see why the Naturalists would want such information.
kim
Maybe they’ve finally decided to warp right on out of our solar system. That’d suit me fine.
Paris moves across the room to stand directly in front of Kim. He bends down until his face is inches from Kim’s.
We MOVE IN to show:

Paris returns to his original position at the head of the table. Kim tries to act as if he is not intimidated, but he is largely unsuccessful.
paris
Your mission is to find these people. You’re to go to Au Naturale, posing as a young couple looking for a little alternative lifestyle action.
Kim is clearly repulsed by the suggestion. Seven watches his reaction with concern.
paris
Something wrong, Security Commander?
kim
No, Sir!
paris
Good. You’re to find these people, arrest them, and bring them back here. We have to know what they were up to. (a beat) And, Commander?
kim
Yes, sir?
paris
Do us all a favor and leave your shock baton in your locker. You won’t need it.

Yes, Sir!
paris
Dismissed.

38 int. holodeck chez sandrine program 38
This is Chez Sandrine, similar to scene two, but the lighting is lower. The pool tables have been replaced with some more alien game tables. In the shadows, we can see the silhouettes of girls dancing seductively for their male customers. Very attractive men speak in intimate whispers to female customers, some appear to be giving gentle massages. Some of the customers -- those with less formal clothing -- have obvious external Borg style implants.
A middle-aged woman with an obvious cybernetic arm rises from her chair, takes the hand of a young male Naturalist, and guides him toward the door.
AS WE FOLLOW THEM, WE SEE:
39 seven and kim 39
They sit at a corner table with a good view of the room. Dressed in casual clothing, they are pretending to have an intimate conversation, while glancing surreptitiously around the room. Both of them look uncomfortable, but that might be intentional.
Seven notices someone looking in their direction:

He is leaning against the bar, looking towards Seven and Kim. He smiles and moves casually toward the table where Kim and Seven sit.

One of us would never be this uneasy with the goings-on here. (a beat) By the way, my complements to your surgeon. I can’t even see your implants -- very impressive! That must’ve cost a fortune!

We are ... well-to-do. As wealthy people, we can get bored easily. We’re looking for something a little different.

You mean she might reject us?
neelix
Well, don’t sound so incredulous! Everyone is here of their own free will. Our people choose to share the joy of physical intimacy with others. It is our way. The financial transaction is a secondary consideration, only.
kim
(doubtfully)
Uh, right.
neelix
Believe me, sir. You’ll learn to appreciate our culture. You’ve never experienced anything quite like it. What your people call “linking,” although it basically accomplishes the same task, is something like listening to a digital recording of a concert. It’s great, but actually being at the concert is better.

kim
I’m impressed. I didn’t realize the Naturalists had such technology.

Of course we do -- we just choose not to put any of it in our bodies. (a beat) Um ... no offense.
Kim starts to object, but Seven places a hand on his arm to silence him.
seven
None taken.

Don’t you still have some enhancements left?
neelix
Nope. Not one. The surgical procedures here are quite advanced. Needed tissues were cloned and implanted, using my own DNA as a base. (a beat) Anyhow, getting back to this...

I’m not sure. Perhaps if you could replay them quickly.
Neelix nods and taps a control. The holographic slide show repeats more quickly, until Janeway is once more visible.

Very clever. So, what do we do now?
janeway
I told you. We talk. Sit.
Seven sits down on the couch.

What makes you think I will cooperate?
janeway
Oh, we’ve learned a lot about you. You’re not exactly a good corporate citizen, are you?
seven
I don’t understand.
janeway
I think you do. You’ve been avoiding implantation your whole career. Your friend there had about 60% of his body enhanced in some way. You -- you’ve had less than 15% of yourself “upgraded.” Why is that, Luvan?
Seven sits quietly, refusing to answer.

Oh? I don’t think so. I think you’re just as uncomfortable with what’s happening to the species as we are. I think you are one of us, at heart. Or are you going to deny it?
Seven stares at the floor, unable to make eye contact.
janeway
Why haven’t you had that right eye ripped out and replaced with a synthetic one? Why not have your olfactory sense upgraded to detect chemical compositions? Is it because you’re afraid a digital sunset isn’t as beautiful as a real one? Do flowers still smell sweet when all you sense is a chemical formula?
seven
It is irrelevant. One cannot stop evolution.
janeway
This isn’t evolution. It’s the destruction of our race. Your people are draining the life out of themselves. (a beat) And, they’re trying to destroy us, as well.
seven
That’s a lie. We do not interfere with your culture. You are allowed to practice your beliefs without persecution.

seven
Implants?
Janeway
Something new - very invasive. Whatever it was, it had fibers running throughout the entire nervous system. Whoever removed them did so in a hurry.
Seven rubs her temples, clearly having difficulty absorbing this.
seven
But, this isn’t logical. It’s illegal to even implant a child below age 16. Much less...

Janeway
The records we stole from your research lab show a joint evolutionary project between the Cyborg and Military Products divisions. The project began at the same time our children started disappearing. It ended shortly before the bodies were found.
Seven is stricken, her eyes wide with horror -- and shame. She looks as if Janeway’s words are physically injuring her.
seven
But ... why?
janeway
We know only that it was an experiment in neural interface technology -- and that it somehow went horribly wrong. In the first two-thirds of the logs, the children are described as “subjects.” In the final section, they are called “threats.” There was a frantic effort to revoke the encryption authentication keys contained in the implants, and then the “threats” were ... “terminated.”
This last word is uttered only with difficulty. Janeway’s eyes fill with tears. She turns to Torres and nods, indicating that Torres should finish the story.
Torres
The records indicate that some of the children might have escaped. An effort was launched to find the remaining children -- and destroy them. That’s where our information ends.
Janeway has composed herself now. When she speaks, there is a hint of rage in her voice.

But, Pahtor --
janeway
-- will wake up with a vague memory of a shoot-out. We’ll feed the appropriate stimulus to your Netlink controllers. It’ll be a convincing show. You’ll be a big heroine.

If I refuse?
janeway
Then you and your friend wake up on the street with a headache and absolutely no memory of the last 3 hours. I’m not a cold-blooded killer. You have a choice.

You and your partner will take us in and lock us up -- Oh, please try to keep “Mr. Happy” from beating us to death, if you don’t mind. There’s another Warp probe launch tomorrow. Security will be diverted from other areas to protect that probe launch, which will give you an opportunity to break us out and help us find what we’re looking for.
seven
To make this convincing, we must return the nine missing backup data modules.
janeway
Nine? We took only five modules.
seven
But there are nine modules missing...
torres
Which means there may be a third party involved -- who used our break in as a cover for their own data theft.

It’s possible, Captain, but those tubes are deep in her neural tissue. They might take a large section of Seven’s brain with them. We need to run more tests to be sure.

These are portions of the basic encryption algorithms which serve as the basis for security on the Netlink.
torres
I cross-referenced the stolen primary backup modules with the secondary backup files to figure out what was on the missing modules. There was only one commonality between them - encryption algorithms.
seven
The algorithms are useless without the authentication and decryption keyspace. That would not be stored in the same location as the algorithms.
janeway
What would anyone want with this information?
seven
With the encryption algorithms and a sufficiently large portion of the appropriate keyspace, it’s possible to intercept and decode nearly all traffic on the Netlink.
(COntinued)

Even your implant traffic?

Everything.
Janeway
But how does any of this connect to the children?

I don’t know - it may not.
Seven considers something for a moment, then resumes her work on an adjacent terminal with more urgency.
torres
(off display)
More good news: It looks like the top-secret encryption keys have been hacked. Someone has gained access to about 5 percent of the keyspace. If they’re clever enough, they may be able to reverse-engineer a large portion of the rest of it.
seven
(off display)
I have traced the access code used to make the initial intrusions. It was issued just over three months ago...

That’s because it was the experimental implant used in the children. (to Janeway) I’ve opened the complete records. It’s not pretty, Sela, but you need to know this.
janeway
(swallows hard)
Go ahead.
torres
This implant was somehow adaptive. It was designed to “learn” how to interface with an organic brain more naturally. The idea was to make an interface that would be an extension of a person’s own consciousness - you wouldn’t have to learn to use it, it would just be there, as natural as your own thought. The problem was, it didn’t work as well on adult brains - adults brains are already “programmed.” It turned out to be easier to use children. Naturalist children were chosen because they were thought to bring less attention - and because their genetically enhanced brains were more likely to adapt to the interface.
janeway
So, what went wrong?
torres
According to this, it worked too well. The children started absorbing too much information - and gaining too much power over the Netlink. The military liaison ordered the project terminated - and the children destroyed.
(CONTINUED)
54 continued: (4) 54
janeway
But they didn’t get all of the children - some escaped...
seven
(off console)
Whoever stole the encryption codes is also accessing the probe launch system.
janeway
What? How does that connect to anything?
torres
I can’t imagine. The warp probe is supposed to investigate some radio signals picked up on a planet light-years from here.
seven
Nonetheless, the same identification code is being used to tamper with the probe.
The sound of a door opening makes all three look up sharply. We see:

What are you doing? We’ve got to get out of here and get help!
Seven
No. That would be pointless. We have another task we must perform.
CUT TO:

As we left it in Scene 52. There is an alarm sounding, and Kim, Torres, and the Doctor are frantically working over Seven. Janeway looks on, concerned.
Doctor
Her heart rate and adrenaline levels are through the roof!
kim
Captain, we’ve got to disconnect her from this thing!
CUT TO:
64 INT. JefferIEs Tube 64
Seven and Torres are working on an open panel.
Torres
What are you trying to do?
seven
I’m accessing the assimilation program within the probe. If we can delete it, we may prevent the assimilation of the other planet.
torres
What about our planet?
seven
It’s illogical to fight on this world where we are already outnumbered if an entire planet will soon be coming to reinforce our enemy. We must prevent that world from being assimilated, or we will have no chance. (off panel) However, I am unable to delete the program.
torres
(thinking hard)
What about changing it?
They look up, hearing strange metallic sounds in the distance. They go back to work with frenzied effort as we CUT TO:
65 int. sickbay 65
Kim is pointing a phaser at Seven. He looks to the Doctor. The Doctor glances to Janeway, who takes a deep breath, releases it slowly, and nods. CUT TO:
66 INT. JefferIEs Tube 66
seven
It’s working! The program is being replaced!

66 Continued: 66
The sounds of metal scraping on metal grow louder. Seven and Torres glance up to see TWO DRONES moving rapidly towards them from either side. They look at each other in resignation. There is a blinding golden flash, and we FADE TO:
67 int. sickbay 67
The lights are dim. Seven is lying on a diagnostic bed, asleep. Janeway is here, watching over Seven. Seven stirs and opens her eyes.
seven
Captain?
Janeway
I’m here, Seven. The Doctor tells me you’re going to be fine.
seven
The probe?
Janeway
Severely damaged, but not destroyed.
Seven
It contains data about the structure of Borg encryption technology. We have to salvage it..
janeway
I appreciate that, Seven, but right now, I’m more concerned with you. What did you experience?
seven
The Borg -- they were once very much like you -- like us, but they allowed their technology to grow without boundaries, never questioning if there was a need to create the things they did. In their ruthless pursuit of technology, they destroyed themselves -- and billions of others.

67 continued: 67
Janeway
Seven, you’ve experienced something I can’t even imagine. How do you feel?
Seven
I feel I have found a purpose.
janeway
How so?
seven
The probe was once programmed to assimilate a species on a planet near the Borg home world. A security officer named Luvan sacrificed herself to replace that assimilation program with the memories stored in her own implant. The Borg must have then deflected the probe, leading it -- impossibly -- to me.
Janeway gives Seven an uncomprehending look.
seven
Somehow this probe encountered one of only a handful of drones ever to regain their individuality. If there is a such thing as destiny, surely this is mine. I have to use the knowledge from the probe for the purpose Luvan intended.
Janeway
And that is?
Seven
I must learn how to do for them what you have done for me -- I must set them free.
CLOSE IN on Seven’s face as she ponders her destiny and FADE OUT:
